Extensive experience of geotechnical engineering that is allied with most principal sectors of
civil engineering has been gained over a period of 30 years. This has involved desk
study, investigation, design, construction and related independent advisory services.
Experience has been accumulated on wide ranging project work throughout UK, Middle East,
India and South-East Asia.
Practicing as a geotechnical advisor and consultant has led to considerable involvement with reservoir engineering projects, slope and coastal stability plus significant experience of piling and ground anchoring works. Frequently this work has been concerned with the preparation of technical reports and expert opinion in connection with claims adjudication, insurance loss adjusting and arbitration, and as a prelude to litigation.
Established consultancy agreements are in place for the provision of professional services on a periodic basis as a geotechnical consultant to Cadogan Consultants (Glasgow), to Elementis plc (London), and to High-Point Rendel (London).
Some principal geotechnical project responsibilities in United Kingdom have been associated with Foyers hydro power station, Glassford water treatment works, Daer reservoir, BP petrochemical complex at Grangemouth, Hunterston dry-dock, HMNB Rosyth, A697 road stabilisation, N18 Ennis By-pass and several chemical residue & tailings facilities. Investigations have been designed and supervised for wide ranging land based and marine projects; landslide and coastal studies managed; stabilisation works implemented; and several land renewal projects and mineral resource studies carried out. Responsibilities under the Reservoirs Act 1975 have been discharged since 1987 as a Supervising Engineer, and later (1995 to date) as a member of the Non Impounding Reservoirs (NIR) Panel.
The northern regional activities of Rendel Geotechnics were managed for a period of seven years,
with responsibility for project work and business development throughout Scotland and Northern England, until 1995. At that time DME Geotech was established for the provision of independent geotechnical advisory and consultancy services within UK and overseas.
The scope of international geotechnical activities has encompassed varied major projects; marine works, highways, bridges, petrochemical installations, heavy foundations, reclamation works and ground engineering claims. International project experience has been gained in both tropical and arid soil environments throughout Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, India, Arabian Peninsula, Arabian
Gulf States and Central Africa.
An Institution of Civil Engineers Graduate Prize was received in 1973 for final year distinction at the University of Salford.
Guidance was provided to the University of Paisley as an external member of the Geological Engineering MSc course drafting committee, and professional assessments are regularly undertaken on behalf of the Geological Society. Service on the Geological Society, West of Scotland Regional Group Committee has been undertaken, including a three year period as group treasurer.
